Microclimate is one of them \u2013 an often misused but essential concept for understanding the complexity of a wine. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"407\" data-end=\"544\">Although it is commonly used to describe the conditions of a vineyard or region, the term has a much more precise meaning.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"546\" data-end=\"735\">According to The <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Oxford Companion to Wine<\/span><\/span>, what we commonly call a &#8220;microclimate&#8221; is actually <strong data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"675\">mesoclimate<\/strong> (the conditions of a hill, valley, or vineyard).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"737\" data-end=\"794\"><strong data-start=\"737\" data-end=\"794\">The real microclimate operates on a much smaller scale:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"896\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1hwwgu3\" data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"827\">inside the calf&#8217;s crown<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"88xzvd\" data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"853\">between rows of vines<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"amr4ns\" data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"896\">even at the level of a single bunch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"924\">Here, minimal differences of:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"925\" data-end=\"1002\">\n<li data-section-id=\"i3mwe0\" data-start=\"925\" data-end=\"935\">Light<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1we8tq\" data-start=\"936\" data-end=\"960\">air circulation<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"19eo3qo\" data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"974\">Humidity<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1qyf1aw\" data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"1002\">foliage density<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1058\">can completely change the way grapes are ripened.<\/p>\n<h4>Macro vs. Mezo vs. Micro \u2013 the essential difference<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1190\">To better understand:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1384\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1o768n0\" data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1256\"><strong data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1209\">Macroclimate<\/strong> \u2013 the climate of a region (e.g. Bordeaux, Tuscany)<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"z32i5x\" data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1319\"><strong data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1273\">Mesoclimate<\/strong> \u2013 conditions of a site or vineyard<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ee4a2j\" data-start=\"1320\" data-end=\"1384\"><strong data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1337\">Microclimate<\/strong> \u2013 the precise conditions around each vine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Why does it matter so much?<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1693\">Microclimates are decisive for <strong data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1692\">the balance of the wine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1752\">In a single row of data-section-id=\"1hd5vs5\" data-start=\"2029\" data-end=\"2057\">What grapes to select<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2059\" data-end=\"2090\">Sometimes, even vine by vine.<\/p>\n<h4 data-section-id=\"17lfttz\" data-start=\"2097\" data-end=\"2134\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2101\" data-end=\"2134\">A permanent game of balance<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2187\">Factors that create different microclimates include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2294\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1wuqz9q\" data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2209\">Exposure to wind<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1yhd1h6\" data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2238\">shadow or direct light<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"179e1gf\" data-start=\"2239\" data-end=\"2276\">Soil type (clay vs. gravel)<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ub9mr2\" data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2294\">water retention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2296\" data-end=\"2307\">For Others are the result of dozens of small climatic variations, precisely intertwined. The difference is subtle.
